MINNEAPOLIS, October 26, 2010 – The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) has accredited the Professional Education Unit at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu). NCATE accreditation, which covers advanced educator preparation programs, is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for the preparation of P-12 teachers and other professional school personnel. Accreditation signifies that these programs underwent a rigorous external review, and meet standards set by the teaching profession at large.
"We are honored to receive this recognition from NCATE and join our fellow institutions who have led the way in creating high standards for educator preparation," said Barbara Butts Williams, PhD, dean of Capella's School of Education. “NCATE-accredited programs are highly regarded by state licensing authorities, school boards, and prospective learners for their academic standards and dedication to improving educational outcomes for school children. This accreditation recognizes and reinforces the Capella commitment to students served by P-12 educators. We are especially grateful to our learners and alumni who participated in this process and share in this achievement.”
NCATE, which is a coalition of 33 national education organizations, serves as the national accrediting body for academic programs that prepare professionals to serve in P-12 settings. NCATE determines which programs meet rigorous national standards in preparing teachers and other school professionals for the classroom.
